🔧 Avalon - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Avalon, the front turn signal bulb sits in the back of the headlight housing. You’ll access it from under the hood, twist the bulb socket out, and swap in a new amber bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool before touching the bulb/socket.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep lights switched OFF.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the headlight/turn signals are switched OFF.
  • Have your new bulbs unboxed and ready so you don’t drop them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb is out

  • Turn the hazard lights ON and walk around the car.
  • Verify which front side is not flashing.
  • Turn the hazards OFF before you start work.

Step 2: Access the back of the headlight housing

  • Open the hood and look behind the headlight on the side you’re replacing.
  • Use a flashlight to find the turn signal bulb socket (it’s a twist-lock socket on the back of the headlight).
  • If a wiring harness clip blocks your hand, gently nudge it aside with a small flathead screwdriver (do not pry hard).

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a “wedge” bulb—no twisting needed).
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling—don’t crush the glass.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Push the new 7440A amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Tip: If you touched the glass, wipe it. Use the nitrile gloves (or a clean tissue) to keep oil off the bulb.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket

  • Line up the socket tabs with the slots in the headlight housing.
  • Insert the socket, then rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Make sure the socket is fully locked—loose sockets can cause moisture intrusion.

Step 7: Test operation

  • Turn the hazard lights ON and confirm the new front turn signal flashes normally.
  • If it doesn’t light: turn hazards OFF, remove the socket again, and reseat the bulb fully.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both left and right front turn signals flash at normal speed.
  • If the signal flashes rapidly, a bulb on that same side is still out (front, rear, or mirror if equipped).
  • Double-check the socket is locked and nothing is pinched behind the headlight.
