🔧 MX-5 Miata - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your MX-5 Miata’s front turn signal can be either a replaceable amber bulb (most common) or an integrated LED inside the headlamp (not a bulb). The access is typically through the front wheel-well liner, then you twist the socket out, swap the bulb, and reassemble.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧯 Let the headlights cool before touching the back of the housing.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves—halogen bulbs can fail early if you touch the glass.
  • 🛑 Park on level ground and set the parking brake before lifting or turning the wheels.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid turning lights on while the socket is out.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm lug nut socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)
  • 10mm socket
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Plastic trim pry tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA type) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA type) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • Wheel-well liner clips (assorted) - Qty: 1 Optional if any break

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on (gives more room).
  • Trim clips can snap—pry gently.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which headlight type you have

  • Use a flashlight to look at the headlight from the front.
  • If there’s a removable bulb socket at the back of the headlamp for the turn signal, follow Steps 2–7 (bulb type).
  • If your turn signal is an LED strip/module with no removable socket, skip to Step 8 (LED headlamp type).

Step 2: Lift the front corner (optional but easiest)

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front corner you’re working on.
  • Set the car down securely on jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).

Step 3: Remove the front wheel (recommended for space)

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside.
  • Reinstall later and Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Open the front wheel-well liner for access

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push-clips along the front section of the liner.
  • If equipped with screws/bolts, remove them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and/or 10mm socket with a 3" extension (3/8" drive).
  • Pull the liner back by hand. Use a plastic trim pry tool if it’s stuck.
  • When reinstalling liner screws/bolts: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach behind the headlamp and locate the turn signal socket (usually the amber-bulb socket).
  • Grip the socket firmly (use nitrile gloves) and twist it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise, then pull it out.

Step 6: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (use nitrile gloves).
  • Push the new front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA type) straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Don’t touch the bulb glass.

Step 7: Reinstall and test

  • Reinsert the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Temporarily turn the ignition on and test the turn signal and hazards.
  • Reposition the liner and reinstall clips using a trim clip removal tool (and screws using Phillips #2 screwdriver / 10mm socket).
  • Reinstall the wheel and Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 8: If your MX-5 Miata has LED front turn signals (no bulb socket)

  • If the front turn signal is integrated LED, the “bulb” is not serviceable separately.
  • The repair is typically: replace the headlamp assembly and then aim/check operation.
  • If you want, tell me: Do you have an LED turn signal (no socket) or a replaceable bulb socket? I’ll give the correct procedure for your exact setup.

âś… After Repair

  • Test left and right turn signals and hazard lights.
  • Verify the turn signal flashes at a normal rate (fast flashing usually means a bulb is still out).
  • Check that the wheel-well liner is secured and not rubbing the tire on full lock.
