🔧 Legacy - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Legacy’s front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlamp assembly. The job is mostly about gaining access behind the headlight, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb without damaging the new bulb or the socket seal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the headlamps cool before working; bulbs and housings can be hot.
- Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- Do not touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- If you’ll be working near the battery positive terminal, disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4")
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim clip removal tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Plastic push clips (fender liner/undertray) - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on if you’ll access through the fender liner (this creates more room).
- A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool made to pop plastic fasteners out without breaking them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb position
- Turn the hazards ON briefly to identify the flashing bulb you’re replacing, then turn hazards OFF.
- Use flashlight to look through the headlamp lens and locate the turn signal area.
Step 2: Open the hood and locate the turn signal bulb socket
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Behind the headlamp, find the wiring going into the headlight housing.
- The bulb socket is the plastic piece you twist to remove the bulb from the housing.
Step 3: Choose your access path (use the one that fits best)
- Path A (most common): Access from the engine bay
- If you can comfortably reach the turn signal socket from behind the headlamp, continue to Step 4.
- Path B: Access through the fender liner
- If access is tight, use Phillips #2 screwdriver and trim clip removal tool to remove a few fender liner fasteners near the front of the wheel well.
- Gently pull the liner back to create a hand-sized opening; use flashlight to locate the turn signal socket.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp housing.
- If stuck, wiggle gently—don’t force.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Avoid touching the glass part of the bulb; hold it by the base.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing, aligning the tabs.
- Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Make sure the socket sits flush; a crooked socket can let moisture into the headlamp.
Step 7: Reassemble the fender liner (if removed)
- Reposition the liner and reinstall clips/screws using trim clip removal tool and Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If any clips are damaged, replace them so the liner doesn’t rub the tire.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way (best practice is to replace in pairs).
âś… After Repair
- Turn hazards ON and verify both front turn signals flash at a normal speed.
- If it “hyper-flashes” (very fast), recheck that the bulb is fully seated and the correct type.
- Check that the fender liner is secured and not contacting the tire.
