🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the front turn signal bulbs in your Highlander. A burned-out turn signal bulb can make your vehicle harder to see and may cause fast blinking on the dashboard.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights and hazard lights off before touching the bulb sockets.
- ⚠️ Let the front lamps cool for a few minutes if they were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- 📋 Park your Highlander on level ground and shift to Park.
- 📋 Set the parking brake.
- 📋 Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- 📋 Turn the headlight switch and hazard switch off.
- 📋 Open the hood using the interior hood release, then support it fully.
- 📋 A bulb socket is the plastic holder that twists into the headlamp housing and holds the bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Front Turn Signal Socket
- Use the hood release handle inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp assembly on the side you are replacing.
- The front turn signal socket is the twist-lock socket behind the outer/front corner area of the headlamp housing.
- Work on one side at a time.
Step 2: Create More Hand Space if Needed
- Use a trim clip removal tool to gently lift any plastic push clips blocking access behind the headlamp area.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small fork-shaped pry tool used to remove plastic fasteners without breaking them.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently raise the center pin first, then remove the clip.
- Set clips aside in a safe place so they do not fall into the engine bay.
Step 3: Remove the Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the front turn signal bulb socket by hand.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out of the headlamp housing.
- No torque spec applies because this is a hand-tight twist-lock bulb socket.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Old Bulb
- Hold the socket firmly with one hand.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- If the bulb is tight, use a clean microfiber cloth for extra grip and wiggle the bulb gently while pulling straight out.
- Do not crush the glass bulb.
Step 5: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to handle the new front turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
- Make sure the bulb sits squarely and does not feel loose.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth before installing.
Step 6: Test the Bulb Before Reassembly
- Keep the socket out of the headlamp housing for this quick test.
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Switch on the turn signal for the side you replaced, or press the hazard switch.
- Confirm the new front turn signal bulb flashes normally.
- Turn the ignition and lights back off before continuing.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb and socket straight back into the headlamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
- No torque spec applies because this socket locks by hand pressure only.
- Gently tug the socket to confirm it is secure.
Step 8: Reinstall Any Removed Covers or Clips
- Use your hands to place any plastic splash covers or access panels back into position.
- Use the trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to align the plastic push clips.
- Press each clip in by hand until it sits flush.
- Close the hood firmly after all tools are removed from the engine bay.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the front of your Highlander to confirm both front turn signals flash.
- ✅ Check the left and right turn signal positions separately from inside the driver seat.
- ✅ Make sure the dashboard turn signal indicator flashes at a normal speed.
- ✅ If the signal still blinks fast, recheck that the bulb is fully seated and the correct bulb type was installed.
- ✅ No scan tool reset, programming, or infotainment reset is required.
