🔧 Impreza - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Impreza, the front turn signal is typically a replaceable amber bulb inside the headlight housing. The job is done from behind the headlight (from the engine bay) by removing the turn-signal socket and swapping the bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if you were just driving (hot plastic and bulbs).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel straight and pop the hood.
- Have your flashlight ready so you can see behind the headlight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm you’re replacing the correct bulb
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF (use the hazard button).
- Verify the front turn signal on the side you’re working on is the one that’s out or blinking fast.
Step 2: Access the turn signal socket behind the headlight
- Open the hood and stand behind the headlight on the side you’re replacing.
- Use a flashlight to locate the turn signal socket (a twist-lock socket going into the back of the headlight housing).
- If an intake snorkel/cover is blocking your hand, gently release its plastic clips using a small flathead screwdriver and move it slightly for access. Only move what you must.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while turning—don’t force the headlight housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
- Install the new amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- A “twist-lock socket” means the socket seals by turning; don’t cross-thread or jam it.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight opening, keeping it aligned.
- Turn the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it stops (snug by hand).
- Reinstall any snorkel/cover clips you moved using the small flathead screwdriver.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Replace the bulb on the other front turn signal as well so color and brightness match.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the hazard lights ON and confirm both front turn signals flash normally.
- Turn the left and right signals ON from inside and verify the dash indicator flashes at a normal speed.
- If it still “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), the bulb may not be seated, or another turn signal bulb may be out.

Quick check (so I don’t steer you wrong):
- âť“ Do your headlights have a regular replaceable bulb (halogen) or are they factory LED headlights?
- ❓ When the turn signal is ON, is the front turn signal completely out, or is it blinking fast (“hyper-flash”)?
