🔧 4Runner - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your 4Runner’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the front headlight assembly. Replacing them is a simple job: you access the bulb socket, twist it out, swap the bulb, and reinstall without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the headlights cool before working; bulbs and housings can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging any bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from the radiator fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flashlight
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the lights OFF and open the hood.
  • Lay a clean microfiber towel nearby to set parts on so nothing gets lost.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb location

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly from the engine bay.
  • Find the turn signal socket (it will be a smaller socket going into the headlight housing).
  • Tip: Turn signals are usually the amber bulb.

Step 2: Make room for your hand (if needed)

  • If access is tight, use a trim clip removal tool to pop up any plastic push-clips on the nearby intake duct/upper cover.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove any Phillips screws holding the plastic ducting (only if present).
  • Move the plastic piece slightly aside to create a clear path to the bulb socket.
  • Tip: Set clips in the towel so they don’t disappear.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the socket firmly and twist it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s stubborn, use the microfiber towel for extra grip (do not use pliers).

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, wipe it clean with the microfiber towel.
  • Tip: Push straight—don’t wiggle hard.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
  • Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place (snug, not forced).

Step 6: Test the turn signal

  • Turn the ignition to ON and switch on the turn signal for that side.
  • Walk to the front and confirm it flashes normally.
  • Repeat Steps 2–6 on the other side.

Step 7: Reinstall any removed covers/clips

  • Reposition any plastic ducting/trim you moved.
  • Reinstall screws with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Press push-clips back in by hand (pin down last if it’s the two-piece style).

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both front turn signals flash at a normal speed on the dash and outside.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both front bulbs flash evenly.
  • If one side “hyperflashes” (very fast), that usually means a bulb isn’t seated or another turn signal bulb is out.
