šŸ”§ Outback - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the front turn signal bulb inside the headlight housing. On your Outback, the bulb is accessed from behind the headlight (under the hood), and it’s usually a quick swap once you can reach the bulb socket.

Assumption: Your Outback uses an amber 7440A (7440NA) front turn signal bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Let the headlights cool before touching anything behind the housing.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves—skin oils can shorten bulb life, and sharp edges are common behind the headlight.
  • āš ļø Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; handle by the base.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the turn signal switch OFF while working.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim clip removal tool

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber 7440A / 7440NA) - Qty: 1 (replace in pairs recommended)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight housing.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the turn signal socket

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight assembly from inside the engine bay.
  • Find the turn signal bulb socket (a twist-lock socket going into the headlight housing).
  • The socket is usually near the outer edge.

Step 2: Make room (only if access is tight)

  • If your hand can’t reach the socket comfortably, remove nearby plastic covers/ducting.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop up plastic push-clips (a push-clip is a 2-piece fastener with a center pin).
  • If a bracket/duct uses bolts, remove them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
  • Pull the socket straight back to remove it from the headlight housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if it’s snug).
  • Install the new 7440A (amber) bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Don’t force it—line it up and push evenly.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
  • Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
  • Reinstall any ducting/brackets you removed using the 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • Reinstall push-clips by pressing the body in, then pressing the center pin flush (use the trim clip removal tool if needed).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other front turn signal.
  • Bulbs age together; pairs match brightness.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and test left and right turn signals.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both front turn signals flash normally.
  • If a signal flashes fast, re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
