🔧 Impreza - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Impreza’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight housings. You’ll access them from under the hood, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything so the signal flashes correctly and stays weather-sealed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
Assumption: your front turn signal bulb type is 7440A (amber).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine and cool headlights to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before reaching behind the headlight.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Make sure the bulb socket O-ring seal seats fully to keep water out.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Trim clip removal tool
- Flathead screwdriver (small)
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 1/4" extension (3")
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (7440A amber) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Put on nitrile gloves (thin protective gloves) so you don’t get oils on the new bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb location
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly on the side you’re replacing.
- Identify the turn signal socket (typically the amber bulb socket on the back of the headlight).
Step 2: Make room to reach the turn signal socket
- If access is tight, remove the intake snorkel/duct clips near the headlight using a trim clip removal tool.
- If your duct has bolts, remove them using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" extension (3").
- Tip: Set clips/bolts in a cup.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
- If it’s stuck, use a flathead screwdriver (small) gently on the socket tabs to start it moving (do not pry hard).
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb from the socket
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (wiggle gently if needed).
- Inspect the socket for corrosion or melting. If you see damage, don’t reinstall until the socket is replaced.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, push the new 7440A amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Make sure the bulb sits straight (crooked bulbs can cause poor contact and fast failure).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket (prevent water leaks)
- Check the socket’s rubber O-ring seal; wipe it clean with a dry glove if dusty.
- Insert the socket into the headlight housing and turn clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
Step 7: Reinstall any removed ducting/clips
- Reinstall any snorkel/duct parts you moved.
- Tighten any 10mm bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet until snug (do not over-tighten into plastic).
- Reinstall push clips using the trim clip removal tool (press the center pin to lock).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way (recommended so brightness/color match).
✅ After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Turn on hazards and walk around to confirm both front signals flash evenly.
- If one side flashes rapidly, the bulb may be the wrong type, not seated, or there may be a socket/wiring issue.
- Confirm the socket is fully locked to prevent moisture inside the headlight.
