🔧 ES350 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your ES350 front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp housing. The usual way to reach them is through the front wheel-well liner, then twist the bulb socket out and swap the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Access is via wheel-well liner (most ES350).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🛑 Support the car with jack stands before going under the fender area.
  • 🛑 Don’t touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • 🛑 Let the headlamp area cool if lights were recently on.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)

  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lb range)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Fender liner push clips - Qty: 2-6

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on (gives more hand room in the wheel well).
  • Have your new bulb(s) ready and keep them clean (use nitrile gloves).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet to loosen the lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the tire is still on the ground.

Step 2: Lift and support the front corner

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift at the correct front jacking point.
  • Set the car onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Give the car a gentle push to confirm it’s stable before removing the wheel.

Step 3: Remove the front wheel

  • Finish removing the lug nuts with the 21mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat under the car as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Open the front fender liner access

  • Use safety glasses and a flashlight so you can see the clips clearly.
  • Remove the plastic push-clips/screws at the front of the wheel-well liner using a trim clip removal tool.
  • If a clip has a slotted center, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pop the center up, then remove the clip body.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlamp.
  • Tip: Don’t crease the liner; flex it gently.

Step 5: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal socket on the back of the headlamp (it’s a twist-lock style).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for extra grip.

Step 6: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Avoid touching the bulb glass; use nitrile gloves.

Step 7: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Before reinstalling the liner and wheel, turn the ignition on and test the turn signal and hazards.
  • If it doesn’t light, remove the socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated.

Step 8: Reinstall the fender liner and wheel

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall the clips using the trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Lower the car using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lb range): Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lb).

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same tools and steps for the opposite front turn signal bulb.

âś… After Repair

  • Test left and right turn signals, hazards, and the dash indicator arrows.
  • Verify the blink rate is normal (a fast blink usually means a bulb isn’t working).
  • Check that the fender liner is secured and not rubbing the tire on full lock (full left/right steering).
