How to Replace Front Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2016 Kia Rio (Step-by-Step Guide)
Tools, bulb fitment tips, safety precautions, and easy access steps behind the headlight housing

🔧 Rio - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the front turn signal bulb by accessing the bulb socket from behind the headlight housing, removing the old bulb, and installing a new amber bulb. This is usually a quick job, but one side may need a small intake duct moved for hand room.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let the headlight area cool before reaching in.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from belts/fans.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key off while working.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF.
- Walk around and confirm which front turn signal is out.
Step 2: Create access behind the headlight (if needed)
- Look behind the headlight housing from the engine bay.
- If your hand fits comfortably, skip to Step 3.
- If space is tight, use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet to loosen/remove the bolt(s) holding the intake snorkel/resonator near that headlight.
- If there are plastic clips, pop them out using a flat trim clip tool (this tool slides under the clip and lifts it without breaking it).
- Move the duct aside gently—do not force it.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to find the turn signal socket on the back of the headlight (it’s the socket with two wires going to it).
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling—don’t twist hard.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Install the new amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the glass with bare fingers; if you do, wipe it with a clean dry cloth.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
- Rotate it clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks snugly.
Step 7: Reinstall any ducting/clips you moved
- Reposition the intake snorkel/resonator.
- Reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Reinstall plastic clips by pressing them in by hand.
Step 8: Test operation
- Turn the hazard lights ON and verify the repaired side flashes normally.
- Check the other front turn signal; replace both if one is dim.
âś… After Repair
- Confirm both front turn signals flash at the correct speed (fast flashing can mean a bulb still isn’t working).
- At night, verify the bulb is amber and the lens area is evenly lit.
- Make sure any intake ducting you moved is fully resecured and not rubbing on the fan belt area.
