🔧 Renegade - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the front turn signal bulb from behind the headlight housing inside the engine bay. The job is mainly removing a few fasteners for access, then twisting the bulb socket out and swapping the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the radiator fan.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool down if the lights were just on.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension 6"
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of the headlight housings.
  • Replace both sides together for matching color.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Create access behind the headlight

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • If a plastic cover/air guide blocks your hand behind the headlight, remove its push-pins using a trim clip removal tool.
  • If there are small bolts holding the cover/duct, remove them using an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 1/4" drive extension 6".
  • Set the fasteners aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 2: Locate the front turn signal bulb socket

  • From behind the headlight, find the bulb socket that goes into the headlight housing (it’s a round plastic “twist-lock” piece with wiring attached).
  • Use a flashlight to confirm you’re on the turn signal socket (not the low beam/high beam).
  • If it won’t move, don’t force it.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (or twist and pull if your socket uses a twist-in style).
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber) into the socket.
  • Do not touch the bulb glass—use nitrile gloves.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
  • Twist clockwise to lock it in place (it should feel snug and fully seated).

Step 6: Reinstall any covers/ducts you removed

  • Reinstall bolts using an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 1/4" drive extension 6".
  • Reinstall push-pins using a trim clip removal tool and gentle hand pressure.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for small 8mm plastic/cover fasteners. Snug, not tight.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same steps for the opposite front turn signal bulb.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the A4? No—on your Renegade, turn the ignition to ON (engine off is fine).
  • Test left and right turn signals and hazard lights.
  • Walk around the vehicle to confirm both front signals are bright and the same color.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb, then re-test.
