🔧 Elantra - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the front turn signal bulb by accessing the back of the headlight housing from under the hood, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb. This restores proper signaling and helps you stay safe and legal on the road.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

Assumption: Your Elantra uses an amber front turn/park bulb (common fit is 2357A/1157A-style); HowToo will match the correct bulb for your exact headlamp.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool; bulbs and housings can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from the cooling fans.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 (recommended to replace in pairs)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and set your flashlight so it shines behind the headlight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the back of the headlight

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Locate the rear of the headlight assembly on the side you’re working on (driver side is tighter near the battery; passenger side may be tighter near the air duct).
  • If your hand space is tight, remove the intake snorkel/upper duct clips using a trim clip removal tool.
  • If there’s a small 10mm fastener holding the snorkel/duct, remove it using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then move the duct aside.
  • Torque to 7–9 Nm (62–80 in-lbs) when reinstalling any 10mm duct fastener.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal socket on the back of the headlight (it’s typically the socket that points outward toward the fender).
  • Grip the socket base firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Twist the socket, not the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (it’s a push-in style on most Elantra housings).
  • If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—don’t crush the glass.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and reassemble

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place (snug by hand).
  • Reinstall any duct/snorkel you moved using the trim clip removal tool for clips and the 10mm socket for any bolt.
  • Torque to 7–9 Nm (62–80 in-lbs) for any 10mm duct fastener.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way to keep brightness and color matched.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Verify the front turn signal flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working).
  • Check that the bulb is seated and the socket is fully locked if it doesn’t work.
