How to Replace Front Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2016 Honda Pilot (7444NA/7440A)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required tools/parts, access tips, and troubleshooting for hyperflash

🔧 Pilot - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
The front turn signal bulbs sit inside the back of each headlight housing. You’ll access them from under the hood, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your Pilot uses an amber 7444NA/7440A-style front turn signal bulb.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let the headlight area cool before reaching in.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep hands clear of moving fans/belts.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel straight and switch the lights completely OFF.
- Open the hood and have a flashlight ready so you can see behind the headlight housings.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access behind the headlight
- Open the hood and locate the back side of each headlight assembly.
- If a plastic air duct or cover is blocking your hand, remove it using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension.
- For plastic push-clips, pop them up with a trim clip removal tool (this tool slides under the clip and lifts it without breaking it).
- If you removed any 10mm bolts, reinstall them later and Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lbs).
Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Find the turn signal socket on the back of the headlight (it’s the socket that twists out; wiring goes into it).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t yank wires.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the bulb glass; hold it by the base. If you accidentally touch it, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and any removed parts
- Insert the socket back into the headlight, making sure the tabs line up.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Reinstall any ducting/covers you removed using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, and Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall any push-clips by pressing them back in until they sit flush.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-4 for the other front turn signal bulb.
- Replacing in pairs keeps brightness matched.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Turn on hazard lights and walk around the Pilot to confirm both front signals flash normally.
- If a signal flashes fast (hyperflash), remove the socket again and make sure the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
