🔧 A4 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your A4’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight housings. The job is mostly done from the engine bay by removing an access cover, twisting out the bulb socket, and swapping in a new amber bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: You have bulb-type front turn signals (not sealed LED).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the headlights cool first; bulbs and housings can be hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep keys out of the car and lights switched off while working.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

- Front turn signal bulb (amber PY21W / BAU15s) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel straight and switch all exterior lights off.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool that won’t scratch panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight
- Open the hood and stand behind the headlight you’re working on.
- Use a flashlight to find the round/oval rear access cover(s) on the headlight housing.
- If the passenger side is tight, use a Torx T25 screwdriver or Torx T30 screwdriver to loosen/remove any nearby snorkel/cover fasteners that block your hand access, then move the plastic piece slightly aside.
Step 2: Remove the headlight rear access cover
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Remove the cover by twisting it (usually counterclockwise) or releasing its tabs.
- If a tab is stubborn, use a trim removal tool to gently pry at the edge. Go slow to avoid cracking plastic.
Step 3: Remove the front turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the turn signal bulb socket inside the housing (it will be one of the larger twist-lock sockets).
- Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/8 to 1/4 turn to unlock, then pull it straight out by hand.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Remove the bulb from the socket (most pull straight out; some require a slight twist).
- Install the new PY21W / BAU15s amber bulb fully into the socket.
- Don’t touch the glass—hold it by the base.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and cover
- Insert the socket back into the headlight, then twist to lock it in place by hand.
- Reinstall the rear access cover and make sure it seals all the way around (this keeps moisture out).
- If you moved any snorkel/cover pieces, reinstall them using a Torx T25 screwdriver or Torx T30 screwdriver (snug only; do not overtighten).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat the same steps for the other headlight.
- Replacing both sides helps them match in brightness.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test left and right turn signals.
- Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the car to confirm both front signals blink evenly.
- If you get a bulb warning, re-check that the bulb is the correct type and fully seated.
- If moisture appears in the headlight later, re-check the rear cover seal.
