🔧 Outback - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Outback’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight housing. The job is mostly about getting access, removing the bulb socket, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn lights OFF and let the bulb cool before touching it.
  • 🧯 Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • 🧰 If you lift the front corner, support with jack stands before working near the wheel well.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip remover
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • Flashlight
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) - Qty: 2
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) - Qty: 2
  • Fender liner push clips - Qty: 2-6

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock a rear wheel using wheel chocks.
  • Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on (gives more room at the fender liner).
  • If you want extra space, lift that front corner with a floor jack and support with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open up access at the wheel well

  • Turn the steering wheel to create working room behind the front tire.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the small access area in the front fender liner (behind the headlight).
  • Remove the plastic clips/screws holding the liner edge using a trim clip remover and Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • If there is a small 10mm fastener on your liner edge, remove it using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Carefully peel the liner back by hand to reach the back of the headlight. Go slow; clips break easily.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the headlight (it’s a twist-lock socket with wiring attached).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip), then pull it straight out.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand using nitrile gloves.
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Wipe the bulb if you accidentally touched the glass (use a clean, dry cloth—do not use oily rags).

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and fender liner

  • Reinsert the socket into the headlight opening and rotate clockwise until it locks.
  • Reposition the fender liner.
  • Reinstall clips/screws using the trim clip remover and Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • If removed, reinstall any 10mm fastener using the 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) for any small 10mm liner fasteners (snug, not tight).

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same steps for the opposite front turn signal bulb.

âś… After Repair

  • Test left and right turn signals and the hazard lights.
  • Verify the blink rate is normal (a fast blink usually means a bulb isn’t seated or another signal bulb is out).
  • Make sure the fender liner is secured so it can’t rub the tire.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
