🔧 Crosstrek - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Crosstrek’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside each headlight housing. Replacing them is usually a quick job from under the hood—no bumper removal needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if it was recently on.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass (if glass type); oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat trim tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the turn signal bulb socket

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly.
  • Find the turn signal bulb socket (the twist-lock socket on the outer side of the headlight housing).
  • Turn signal is usually the outermost bulb.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket from the headlight

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use a small flat trim tool to gently help you get a better grip—do not pry hard on the plastic.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a wedge-fit bulb).
  • Use the flashlight to confirm the socket contacts are clean and not melted or green/corroded.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Press the new amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Keep your nitrile gloves on while handling the bulb.
  • Match the new bulb shape exactly to the old.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
  • Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it stops and feels fully locked.
  • Do not overtighten—this is a plastic twist-lock.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same procedure for the other front turn signal bulb.
  • Replace in pairs for equal brightness/color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and walk around to confirm both front signals flash normally.
  • If one flashes fast, that bulb is not seated, the wrong type, or there’s a socket/wiring issue.
