🔧 Crosstrek - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp assemblies and can be replaced from under the hood. The job is mostly “twist out the bulb socket, swap bulb, twist back in,” but space can be tight on one side.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool down if you were just driving.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you loosen the battery hold-down for access, don’t let tools bridge battery terminals.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
- Plastic push clips (assorted) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see behind the headlamp.
- If access feels too tight on a side, be ready to loosen/remove the nearby intake duct or battery hold-down (steps below).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the turn signal socket
- Open the hood and look behind the headlamp assembly on the side you’re replacing.
- Find the turn signal bulb socket (a round socket with wires going to it) and note its position.
- Tip: Turn on hazards briefly to confirm.
Step 2: Create working room (only if needed)
- If your hand won’t fit comfortably, remove the nearby plastic intake snorkel/duct clips using a trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver.
- If access is still tight, loosen the battery hold-down (if it’s in the way) using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Lift/shift the part just enough to reach the bulb socket—don’t force anything.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket (it’s a press-in style).
- Install the new 7440A amber bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Optional: Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket into the headlamp opening, keeping it aligned.
- Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
- Gently tug to confirm it’s fully seated.
Step 6: Reinstall anything you moved
- Reinstall intake ducting and push clips by hand; use a trim clip removal tool if a clip needs aligning.
- If you loosened the battery hold-down, re-tighten the nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the other front bulb the same way so both sides match in brightness and color.
✅ After Repair
- Test left and right turn signals, then test hazards.
- Confirm the bulb flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
- Make sure any intake ducting you moved is fully clipped back in place.
