🔧 Pilot - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Pilot, the “front turn signal” can mean the bulb inside the headlight housing (front corner amber signal). Touring also has mirror turn signals, but those are typically LED units (no replaceable bulb), so the fix is different.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and use jack stands before going under the fender area.
  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlight area cool before touching the socket.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch a halogen bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key away from the vehicle so lights don’t auto-turn on.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 22mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, headlight housing) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs.
  • Fender liner push clips - Qty: 2-6 Optional; clips can break.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room at the fender liner).
  • Tip: Do one side at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which “front turn signal” you’re replacing

  • Turn the ignition ON and activate the turn signal.
  • Watch the front corner light in the headlight and the mirror signal.
  • If the headlight corner signal is out, continue below (bulb serviceable).
  • If only the mirror signal is out, it’s typically an LED unit and usually replaced as an assembly (tell me which side, and I’ll walk you through that path).

Step 2: Lift the front corner (recommended for access)

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift at the front side jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tip: Never rely on the jack alone.

Step 3: Remove the front wheel (best access)

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2" breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts, then remove them.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs) using a 1/2" drive torque wrench.

Step 4: Pull back the front fender liner

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push-clips along the front portion of the fender liner.
  • If equipped with small screws, remove them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Carefully pull the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlight.
  • Tip: Don’t crease the liner; it can crack.

Step 5: Remove the turn signal bulb socket from the headlight

  • Use a flashlight to locate the turn signal socket on the back of the headlight assembly (outer/front corner area).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/4 turn to unlock, then pull it straight out.
  • Tip: Turn gently—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 6: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new amber bulb fully into the socket until it seats.

Step 7: Reinstall socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight and rotate to lock.
  • Turn ignition ON and test the turn signal and hazards.
  • If it doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb, then re-lock the socket.

Step 8: Reinstall fender liner and wheel

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool (and any screws using the 8mm socket or Phillips screwdriver).
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle, then Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs) in a star pattern using a 1/2" drive torque wrench.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify left and right front turn signals flash at a normal speed (fast flash usually means a bulb is still out).
  • Check hazards and parking lights.
  • Make sure the fender liner is secure and not rubbing the tire.
