🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the front turn signal bulbs in your Highlander. The front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp assemblies and are accessed from behind the headlights in the engine bay.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching the lamp area if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🔌 Turn the ignition and all exterior lights off.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- 💡 A bulb socket is the plastic holder that twists into the back of the headlamp housing.
- 📌 If replacing only one bulb, the left and right sides use the same basic process.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood
- Use the interior hood release handle, then open the hood from the front latch.
- Use the hood prop rod to hold the hood open securely.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp assembly.
Step 2: Find the front turn signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to locate the turn signal socket at the back of the headlamp assembly.
- The turn signal bulb socket is usually the outer/lower amber bulb position in the headlamp housing.
- Look for the socket with wiring going into it and a twist-lock base.
- Work slowly; space is tight.
Step 3: Make room if needed
- Use a flat trim tool to gently move any plastic retaining clip or splash shield edge if it blocks hand access.
- Use needle-nose pliers only if a small clip needs gentle help; do not pull on wiring.
- Do not remove the headlamp assembly for this normal bulb service unless access is blocked by damage or aftermarket parts.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Use your gloved hand to grip the turn signal bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp housing.
- If it is tight, use the clean microfiber towel for better grip.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Use your gloved hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is stuck, use a clean microfiber towel for grip and wiggle gently while pulling.
- Do not crush the glass bulb.
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new front turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a microfiber towel before installing.
Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket
- Use your gloved hand to insert the bulb and socket back into the headlamp housing.
- Align the locking tabs with the slots in the housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it stops and locks in place.
- No torque spec applies; this is a hand-tight twist-lock socket.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side if replacing as a pair
- Use the same steps on the opposite headlamp assembly.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the socket is fully locked on both sides.
- Replacing pairs keeps brightness matching.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the ignition to ON or start your Highlander.
- ✅ Turn on the left turn signal and check the front lamp flashes normally.
- ✅ Turn on the right turn signal and check the front lamp flashes normally.
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and verify both front turn signals flash.
- ✅ If a turn signal flashes very fast, recheck that the bulb is seated and the socket is locked.
- ✅ Close the hood securely when finished.
