How to Replace Front Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, wheel-well access tips, and safety precautions to change both front turn signal bulbs

🔧 Equinox - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the front turn signal bulbs by going in behind the headlight through the wheel well. The bulb sits in a socket that twists out, so no headlight removal is needed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the lights.
- 🔹Allow the headlight area to cool down if the lights were just used; they can get hot.
- 🔹Set the parking brake and keep the vehicle on level ground so it cannot roll.
- 🔹Disconnecting the battery is not required, but avoid touching metal bulb contacts with bare hands.
- 🔹Do not touch the glass part of any bulb with your fingers; oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹Flathead screwdriver (medium size)
- 🔹Phillips screwdriver (medium size)
- 🔹7mm socket
- 🔹1/4" drive ratchet
- 🔹1/4" drive extension (3"–6")
- 🔹Work light or flashlight
- 🔹Mechanic gloves
- 🔹Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔹Front turn signal bulb (3157NA or equivalent, amber) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
- 🔹Dielectric grease for bulb sockets - Qty: 1 small tube
- 🔹Plastic push-pin clips for wheel well liner - Qty: 4–6 (optional, in case any break)
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park the Equinox on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
- 🔹Turn the steering wheel fully to the opposite side you are working on (for example, full right to work on the left front). This opens up space in the wheel well.
- 🔹Put on safety glasses and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.
- 🔹Have your new bulbs unpacked and ready so the light housing is open for the shortest time possible.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Position the wheel for access
- 🔹Turn the steering wheel fully to the right if you will replace the left front bulb first. Turn fully to the left if you will start on the right front bulb.
- 🔹This creates more room between the tire and the plastic wheel well liner. The wheel well liner is the plastic shield inside the wheel area that keeps water and dirt away.
Step 2: Remove wheel well liner fasteners
- 🔹Locate the small plastic push-pin clips and screws on the front edge of the wheel well liner near the bumper.
- 🔹Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry up the center of each plastic push-pin, then pull the whole clip out. Pry gently to avoid breaking clips.
- 🔹Use the Phillips screwdriver or 7mm socket with 1/4" drive ratchet (depending on what your vehicle has) to remove any small screws holding the front edge of the liner.
- 🔹You only need to loosen and bend back the front section of the liner, not remove it completely.
Step 3: Pull back the wheel well liner
- 🔹Gently pull the loosened front part of the plastic liner away from the body of the Equinox with your hand.
- 🔹Create an opening large enough to reach your arm through toward the back of the headlight assembly.
- 🔹Use your work light or flashlight to see inside the opening.
Step 4: Locate the front turn signal bulb socket
- 🔹Look or feel behind the headlight assembly from inside the wheel well.
- 🔹The front turn signal socket is usually the lower outer bulb socket on the headlamp, with two wires going into it.
- 🔹The socket is round and will twist out of the headlight housing.
Step 5: Remove the bulb socket from the headlight
- 🔹Grip the bulb socket firmly with your hand.
- 🔹Turn the socket about one quarter-turn counterclockwise (to the left) to unlock it. No tool is needed, just hand force.
- 🔹Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing once it has turned and released.
Step 6: Remove the old bulb
- 🔹Hold the socket in one hand and the bulb in the other.
- 🔹On this style, the bulb pulls straight out of the socket. Wiggle it gently and pull it directly away from the socket.
- 🔹If it feels stuck, keep a firm grip on the socket so you don’t drop it and slowly rock the bulb side to side while pulling.
Step 7: Prepare and install the new bulb
- 🔹Before installing, put a tiny amount of dielectric grease on the bulb’s metal contacts. Dielectric grease is a special non-conductive paste that helps prevent corrosion and moisture.
- 🔹Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Use gloves or hold it by the plastic base.
- 🔹Align the pins on the new bulb with the slots in the socket and push the bulb straight in until it clicks or feels firmly seated.
Step 8: Reinstall the bulb socket into the headlight
- 🔹Guide the socket and bulb back into the opening in the headlight housing.
- 🔹Align the tabs on the socket with the notches in the housing.
- 🔹Push the socket inward and turn it clockwise (to the right) about one quarter-turn until it stops. This locks it in place.
Step 9: Test the new bulb
- 🔹Temporarily let the wheel well liner hang open for now.
- 🔹Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and turn on the left or right turn signal for the side you just worked on.
- 🔹Check from the front of the Equinox that the new bulb flashes normally and is as bright as the other side.
- 🔹Turn the ignition back OFF after confirming.
Step 10: Reinstall the wheel well liner
- 🔹Push the wheel well liner back into its original position along the front edge.
- 🔹Reinstall the screws using the Phillips screwdriver or 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet. No torque spec is required; snug them just enough so the liner does not move.
- 🔹Push the plastic clips back in: install the outer body first, then press the center pin in until it is flush.
Step 11: Repeat on the other side
- 🔹Turn the steering wheel fully the other way for access.
- 🔹Repeat Steps 2–10 on the other front turn signal so both bulbs are new and match in brightness and color.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the vehicle to confirm both front turn signals flash evenly and at normal speed.
- 🔹Check front and rear turn signals together; a fast flash usually means a bulb is still out.
- 🔹Make sure the wheel well liners are secured and do not rub the tires when turning.
- 🔹Take a short drive at night and confirm visibility and that no “lamp out” messages appear on the dash.
