🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Highlander’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight assemblies. The job is mostly accessing the bulb socket from behind the headlight, swapping the bulb, and confirming the signal flashes normally.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
Assumption: Your Highlander uses a standard halogen front turn signal bulb (common fit: 7440A/amber).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool down first; bulbs and housings can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep metal tools away from the battery terminals.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Flathead screwdriver

- Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A equivalent) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see behind the headlight.
- Put on nitrile gloves; they help keep oils off the bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the turn signal bulb socket (behind the headlight)
- Open the hood and look behind the headlight assembly.
- Use a flashlight to find the turn signal bulb socket (it’s a twist-lock socket going into the back of the headlight).
Step 2: Create working room (only if access is tight)
- If your hand won’t fit comfortably, remove the nearby intake duct/clips to gain space.
- Use a trim clip removal tool or flathead screwdriver to pop up plastic push-clips (lift the center pin, then remove the clip).
- If there’s a small bracket/bolt holding the duct, remove it with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- When reinstalling any 10mm bolts, Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
- Tip: Set clips in a cup.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
- Install the new amber 7440A equivalent bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry lint-free cloth before installing.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight opening.
- Rotate clockwise until it locks in place (snug and fully seated).
Step 6: Reinstall any ducts/clips you removed
- Reposition the duct or covers by hand.
- Reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
- Reinstall push-clips by inserting the body first, then pushing the center pin down flush.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test the left and right turn signals.
- Turn on hazard lights and walk around the Highlander to confirm both front signals flash evenly.
- If one side “hyper-flashes” (blinks very fast), re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
