šŸ”§ Wrangler - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Wrangler’s front turn signal bulbs sit in the front fender/flare lamp housings. You’ll access the bulb socket from inside the front wheel well, twist the socket out, and swap in an amber bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • āš ļø Let lights cool before touching the bulb.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life).
  • āš ļø If you remove a wheel, support the Jeep with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 19mm socket
  • Torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber 3157NA) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully to the side you’re working on (gives more room in the wheel well).
  • Tip: You usually don’t need to remove the wheel.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Create access in the front wheel well

  • Turn the steering wheel to open up space near the front of the wheel well.
  • Use a flashlight to find the back side of the front fender/flare lamp area.
  • If the inner liner blocks access, remove the needed fasteners:
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic push clips (a trim clip tool is a fork-shaped pry tool that removes plastic clips without breaking them).
  • Use a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and/or a Phillips screwdriver to remove any small screws holding the liner edge.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb socket going into the back of the lamp housing.
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the housing.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new amber 3157NA bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Wear nitrile gloves to keep skin oils off the bulb.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and liner

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Reinstall the inner fender liner fasteners using the 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, Phillips screwdriver, and press-in clips by hand.

Step 5: Optional wheel removal (only if you need more room)

  • Loosen lug nuts slightly using a 19mm socket and torque wrench (or ratchet) before lifting.
  • Lift at the approved jacking point with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Reinstall wheel and tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Test the left and right turn signals and the hazard lights.
  • Make sure the turn signal flashes at a normal speed (a fast flash usually means a bulb isn’t seated or a bulb is out).
  • Check that the socket is fully locked—loose sockets can let water into the housing.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

You Save: $50-$120 by doing it yourself!
