📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Turn the light switch and hazard switch off.
- Replace both front turn signal bulbs together for even brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Lift the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Use safety glasses to protect your eyes while working near the headlamp area.
Step 2: Locate the Front Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Stand in front of your Highlander and look behind the headlamp assembly.
- The front turn signal socket is the bulb holder behind the amber front turn signal section of the lamp.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe away dust if the area is dirty.
- Work on one side at a time.
Step 3: Move Any Small Harness Clips If Needed
- If a wiring clip blocks access, use a flat-blade trim tool to gently release the plastic clip from its bracket.
- A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that removes clips without scratching or cracking them.
- If the clip is tight, use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the clip tabs lightly.
- Do not pull hard on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Grip the front turn signal bulb socket by hand.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp assembly.
- No torque spec applies because this socket locks by hand.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Hold the socket firmly by hand.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is stuck, use a clean microfiber towel for grip and pull straight outward.
- Do not twist the glass bulb unless the replacement bulb style has locking pins.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber towel to handle the new front turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Make sure the bulb is not loose in the socket.
- Do not touch bulb glass.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb and socket into the headlamp assembly by hand.
- Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
- Do not force it. If it does not lock, remove it and realign the tabs.
- No torque spec applies because this socket is hand-tight only.
Step 8: Reattach Any Harness Clips
- Use your hand to press any wiring clips back into their original brackets.
- If needed, use needle-nose pliers to guide the clip gently.
- Make sure wiring is routed away from hot or moving parts.
Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 2 through 8 for the opposite front turn signal bulb.
- Use nitrile gloves and the clean microfiber towel again to keep the new bulb clean.
Step 10: Test the Turn Signals
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Move the turn signal stalk left and right to test both front turn signal bulbs.
- Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the front of your Highlander.
- Both front turn signals should flash at normal speed.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both front turn signals flash evenly and at normal speed.
- ✅ If one side still flashes fast, recheck that bulb seating and socket connection.
- ✅ If the bulb does not light, inspect the socket for corrosion or looseness.
- ✅ Close the hood securely after testing.
