🔧 Forester - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Forester’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight housings. The job is usually done from under the hood by twisting the bulb socket out and swapping the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from the cooling fans.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip remover (specialty)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (medium)
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔦 Open the hood and have a flashlight ready so you can see behind the headlight.
  • 🧤 Put on gloves to keep oil off the new bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb location

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight on the side you’re replacing.
  • Find the turn-signal socket (it’s the socket that twists out; wiring goes into it).

Step 2: Make room to reach the socket (if needed)

  • If your hand won’t fit, remove the nearby plastic intake duct/cover clips using a trim clip remover (specialty).
  • A trim clip remover is a forked tool that pops plastic clips without breaking them.
  • If a clip is tight, gently help lift the center pin with a flat-blade screwdriver (medium), then pull the clip out with the trim clip remover (specialty).

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no twisting on this style).
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Tip: Hold bulb by the base.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise by hand until it locks snugly.

Step 6: Reinstall any removed ducting/clips

  • Reinstall any clips you removed by pressing them in place by hand.
  • If the clip has a center pin, push the clip body in first, then push the center pin flush.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–6 for the other front turn signal bulb so both sides match in brightness and color.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • ✅ Verify the turn signal flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t seated or is the wrong type).
  • ✅ Walk around and confirm the front and rear signals for that side are both working.
