🔧 CX-5 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the front turn signal bulb(s) from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay. This is usually a quick job—most of the time it’s just removing the bulb socket, swapping the bulb, and testing operation.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine and cool headlights to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before reaching behind the headlight.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of the new bulb (skin oils can shorten bulb life). If you do, wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and a clean paper towel.
- ⚠️ If you need more room and remove any intake snorkel/clips, reinstall them securely so nothing can contact the radiator fan.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the lights OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and set a flashlight where it can shine behind the headlight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly to confirm which front turn signal is out, then turn them OFF.
- Do one side at a time.
Step 2: Access the back of the headlight
- From the engine bay, look behind the headlight on the side you’re replacing.
- Use a flashlight to find the turn signal bulb socket (the “socket” is the plastic holder the bulb locks into).
- If a plastic cover/air snorkel blocks access, use a plastic trim removal tool to pop up any plastic clips, and use a small flathead screwdriver only if a clip center pin is stubborn.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the bulb socket firmly by hand (wear nitrile gloves for better grip).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb from the socket
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- If it’s stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling—don’t crush the glass.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Don’t force it—line it up and press.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket into the headlight
- Insert the socket into the headlight opening, making sure it sits flush.
- Twist clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
Step 7: Test operation
- Turn the ignition ON and switch the turn signal ON for that side.
- Verify the front turn signal flashes normally (not rapid “hyper-flash”).
- If you removed any clips/covers, reinstall them using the plastic trim removal tool and small flathead screwdriver as needed.
âś… After Repair
- Walk around and confirm front and rear signals flash at a normal speed on both sides.
- If the new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb, then check the socket is fully locked.
- If it still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse, socket corrosion, or wiring at the headlight.
