🔧 Escape - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the front turn signal bulb in your Escape when it burns out, flashes fast, or stops lighting. On your Escape, the front turn signal bulb is accessed from the front wheel-well area by moving the inner fender liner aside.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the lighting wiring.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulb area cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and keep the parking brake engaged.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade trim clip remover
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb, amber 7444NA-style - Qty: 1 per side
  • Front turn signal bulbs, amber 7444NA-style - Qty: 2 if replacing both sides

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Escape on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlamp switch OFF.
  • ↩️ Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you are replacing. For the left bulb, turn the wheel right. For the right bulb, turn the wheel left.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • 🔎 A trim clip remover is a small pry tool used to lift plastic push clips without breaking them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open Access Through the Wheel-Well Liner

  • Use the flashlight to look inside the front wheel well behind the headlamp.
  • Use the flat-blade trim clip remover to remove the plastic push clips holding the front inner fender liner.
  • If equipped with small screws, use the Phillips #2 screwdriver or 7mm socket with 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove them.
  • Gently pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlamp housing.
  • Do not crease the liner sharply.

Step 2: Find the Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Use the flashlight to locate the front turn signal bulb socket on the rear of the headlamp housing.
  • The turn signal socket is usually the amber bulb/socket position toward the outer/front area of the lamp assembly.
  • Make sure you are not removing the low beam or marker light socket.

Step 3: Remove the Bulb Socket

  • With your gloved hand, rotate the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp housing.
  • No wrench is used on the socket; it is a twist-lock plastic piece.
  • Turn gently; plastic gets brittle with age.

Step 4: Replace the Bulb

  • Use your nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new front turn signal bulb, amber 7444NA-style straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the bulb does not seat easily, flip it around and try again.
  • Do not force the bulb into the socket.

Step 5: Test the New Bulb Before Reassembly

  • Keep the bulb and socket clear of moving parts.
  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Switch on the turn signal for the side you replaced.
  • Use the flashlight if needed to confirm the bulb flashes normally.
  • Turn the ignition and signal OFF after testing.

Step 6: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Make sure the socket sits flat and snug, so water cannot enter the lamp housing.

Step 7: Reinstall the Wheel-Well Liner

  • Move the inner fender liner back into its original position by hand.
  • Use the flat-blade trim clip remover to help align clip holes if needed.
  • Reinstall the plastic push clips by pressing them in by hand.
  • If screws were removed, reinstall them with the Phillips #2 screwdriver or 7mm socket with 1/4-inch drive ratchet.
  • Snug the screws only; do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

Step 8: Final Function Check

  • Turn the ignition ON.
  • Check the left and right turn signals.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both front bulbs flash evenly.
  • Turn all lights OFF when finished.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the turn signal no longer flashes rapidly.
  • ✅ Check that the wheel-well liner is secure and not rubbing the tire.
  • ✅ If the new bulb still does not work, inspect the bulb socket for corrosion or loose terminals.
  • ✅ No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required for this repair.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50-$110 per side, depending on labor rate and bulb markup

DIY Cost: $8-$25 for the bulb

You Save: $40-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
