šŸ”§ Fusion - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Fusion’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp housing. The most common way to reach them is through the front wheel-well liner, where you’ll remove a few fasteners, twist the bulb socket out, and swap the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • 🧯 Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • šŸ”„ Turn lights OFF and let the bulb cool before touching it.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; wheel-well fasteners can snap or pop loose.
  • šŸ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Work light
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal/parking light bulb (amber, 3157A/3157AK equivalent) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • šŸ’” Turn the steering wheel toward the side you’re working on to open up wheel-well access.
  • 🧰 A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool used to pop plastic fasteners out without breaking them.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the tire is still on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and support the front corner

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front corner you’re working on.
  • Set the car onto a jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Shake the car gently to confirm stability.

Step 3: Remove the front wheel

  • Remove the lug nuts using the 19mm socket, then remove the wheel.

Step 4: Open the front wheel-well liner access

  • Use a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the small screws along the front edge of the wheel-well liner (near the bumper/headlamp area).
  • Remove plastic push-clips using the trim clip removal tool. If needed, gently help the center pin up with a flathead screwdriver, then pull the clip out.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlamp. Use a work light so you can clearly see the bulb sockets.

Step 5: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal/park bulb socket at the rear of the headlamp (it will twist-lock into the housing).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle—don’t yank the wires.

Step 6: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
  • Use a work light to confirm the bulb is sitting square (not crooked).

Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp and rotate clockwise until it stops (locked).
  • Tuck the wiring so it won’t rub on the tire or get pinched by the liner.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel-well liner fasteners

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall the push-clips by hand.
  • Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until snug.

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the jack stand using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Use a 1/2" drive torque wrench with a 19mm socket and tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ” Test the left and right turn signals, then test the hazard lights.
  • šŸ‘€ Walk to the front and confirm both sides flash evenly and are bright amber.
  • 🧼 If the new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and re-seat it firmly in the socket.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
