🔧 CX-5 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your CX-5’s front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlight housing. The job is mostly done from under the hood by twisting the bulb socket out, swapping the bulb, then testing the signal before reassembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool; bulbs and nearby parts can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the hood securely; keep hands clear of the cooling fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (small)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and set a flashlight so you can see behind the headlight.
  • If access is tight, plan to remove the air intake duct (right side) or washer filler neck (left side).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the correct bulb socket

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight on the side you’re replacing.
  • Find the turn signal socket (it’s the socket that twists out; it typically points toward the fender side of the headlight).
  • If unsure, turn hazards on briefly. Turn them back OFF before touching anything.

Step 2: Create working room (only if needed)

  • If your hand doesn’t fit comfortably, remove nearby covers/ducting.
  • On the air intake duct area: use a trim clip removal tool or small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the center pin of the plastic clips, then pull the clips out.
  • If a 10mm bolt is present: use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension to remove it.
  • Move the duct/cover aside gently (no need to force it).

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the turn signal socket firmly and twist it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out by hand.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Hold the bulb by the base only.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight housing, making sure the tabs align.
  • Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn by hand until it stops (snug, not forced).

Step 6: Reinstall anything you removed

  • Reposition the duct/cover.
  • Reinstall any bolts using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension (snug by feel; these are small fasteners).
  • Reinstall push clips: press the outer body in first, then press the center pin flush using your thumb or a small flat-blade screwdriver.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test the left/right turn signals and hazards.
  • Verify the bulb blinks at a normal speed (fast blinking usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
  • Make sure any ducts/covers you moved are secure and not rubbing a belt or fan area.
