🔧 CX-5 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your CX-5’s front turn signal bulbs sit in the back of each headlight housing. The job is mostly about gaining access, swapping the bulb without touching the glass, and confirming the signal flashes normally (not fast).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.0 hours (both sides)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the fans and belts.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool; bulbs and housings can get hot.
- ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).

- Plastic push clips (fender liner) - Qty: 2–6 (as needed)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room at the fender liner).
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side/bulb
- Turn the hazards on briefly, then off, to see which front turn signal is out.
- Use a flashlight to look through the headlight lens and confirm the turn signal area.
Step 2: Create access (choose ONE method below)
- Method A (most common): Through the fender liner
- Turn the wheel fully to the opposite side (no tools).
- Remove the front portion of the liner fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver.
- If there are screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket with 3/8" ratchet.
- Pull the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlight.
- Method B: Raise the front corner for more room (optional)
- Loosen the wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Lift at the proper jack point using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum), then support with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Remove the wheel with a 21mm socket and access the liner fasteners as in Method A.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Reach behind the headlight and locate the turn signal socket (the twist-lock bulb holder).
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand; if tight, use nitrile gloves for grip.
- Pull the socket straight out.
- Tip: Don’t pull on the wires.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in type).
- Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
- Turn clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place (hand-tight).
Step 6: Test operation
- Turn the ignition to ON and activate that turn signal.
- Verify normal flash rate (not rapid) and that the bulb lights amber.
Step 7: Reassemble the liner / wheel
- Reposition the liner and reinstall clips/screws using a trim clip removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and/or 10mm socket with 3/8" ratchet.
- If you removed the wheel, install it and snug the lug nuts using a 21mm socket.
- Lower the vehicle, then tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (20–200 Nm range): Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Confirm left and right turn signals and hazards all work.
- Make sure the fender liner is secured and not rubbing the tire during steering.
- If it still flashes fast, recheck bulb seating and the socket lock.
