🔧 Camry - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the front turn signal bulbs inside the headlight assemblies on your Camry. The job is mostly done from under the hood by reaching behind the headlights and twisting the bulb socket out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Turn the ignition off, remove the key, and make sure the lights and turn signals are OFF before working.
  • 🔸Let the engine bay cool down if you recently drove; some parts can be hot.
  • 🔸Do not touch the glass of any bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔸You do NOT need to disconnect the battery for this job, but avoid metal tools near the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔸10mm socket
  • 🔸1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🔸3" socket extension
  • 🔸Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🔸Work light or flashlight
  • 🔸Mechanic gloves
  • 🔸Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔸Front turn signal bulbs (7440 amber) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • 🔸Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔸Plastic push clips for upper radiator cover - Qty: 2–4 (optional, in case any break)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🔸Park the Camry on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn off the ignition.
  • 🔸Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • 🔸Lay out your tools and parts where you can easily reach them.
  • 🔸If working at night or in a dim area, set up a work light so you can clearly see behind the headlights.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the back of the headlights

  • 🔸Open the hood and look behind each headlight assembly near the front corners of the engine bay.
  • 🔸On the driver side, you’ll reach in near the battery; on the passenger side, you’ll reach in near the air intake duct.
  • 🔸If access is tight, use a 10mm socket with the 1/4" drive ratchet to remove one or two small bolts holding the plastic air intake snorkel or cover, then gently move the plastic aside for more room. Only move plastic parts, not metal brackets.

Step 2: Identify the front turn signal socket

  • 🔸Each headlight has several bulb sockets on the back. The front turn signal socket is usually the one toward the outer edge of the car and slightly lower than the main headlight bulb.
  • 🔸It will have a gray or black plastic base with two wires going into it.
  • 🔸Use your work light or flashlight to clearly see the socket and confirm you can reach it with one hand.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • 🔸Grip the turn signal socket firmly with your hand.
  • 🔸Turn the socket about a quarter-turn counterclockwise (to the left) to unlock it. No tools needed here.
  • 🔸Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing. It may feel snug; wiggle gently but don’t force it.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • 🔸Hold the socket so you can see the bulb clearly.
  • 🔸On your Camry, the front turn signal bulb (7440) simply pulls straight out of the socket.
  • 🔸Grip the base of the bulb (not the glass) and pull it straight out. If it’s stuck, rock it gently side to side while pulling.

Step 5: Prepare the new bulb

  • 🔸Open the package for the new 7440 amber bulb, being careful not to drop it.
  • 🔸Avoid touching the glass with bare fingers; use gloves or hold by the base. If you do touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth.
  • 🔸Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the bulb’s metal contacts or the socket terminals. Dielectric grease helps prevent corrosion and makes future removal easier.

Step 6: Install the new bulb into the socket

  • 🔸Line up the metal contacts on the new bulb with the slots in the socket.
  • 🔸Push the bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated and feels snug.
  • 🔸Gently tug the bulb to make sure it does not pull out easily.

Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket into the headlight

  • 🔸Align the tabs on the socket with the notches in the headlight opening.
  • 🔸Insert the socket fully into the headlight housing.
  • 🔸Turn the socket a quarter-turn clockwise (to the right) until it stops and feels locked in place.

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • 🔸Move to the other front corner and repeat Steps 1–7 for the other front turn signal.
  • 🔸If you moved any plastic air intake duct or covers, reinstall them now using the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet. Tighten bolts snug by hand; no specific torque spec is critical here, just firm, not forced. Do not overtighten small bolts.

Step 9: Test the new bulbs

  • 🔸Close the hood partially but do not latch it yet.
  • 🔸Turn the ignition to ON (or start the engine), then activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • 🔸Walk to the front and confirm both front turn signals flash at normal speed and brightness.
  • 🔸If one side does not light, turn the ignition OFF, open the hood, and recheck that bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked in the housing.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔸Make sure both front turn signals and hazard lights work correctly.
  • 🔸Check that the turn signal flash rate is normal; very fast flashing usually means a bulb is out or not seated properly.
  • 🔸Confirm the headlight housings are firmly in place and no wires are pinched.
  • 🔸Close the hood fully and make sure it latches securely.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80–$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10–$25 (parts only, both bulbs)

You Save: $55–$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3–0.5 hours.
