🔧 Focus - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Focus front turn signal bulb sits in the back of the headlight housing. The job is usually a simple “twist the socket and swap the bulb” repair, but space can be tight, so you may need to move a small intake duct or the washer-fill neck for access.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlight area cool before reaching in.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten bulb life if you touch the glass.
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep fingers clear of moving fans/belts.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Plastic trim removal tool

- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park (or in gear if manual), and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel straight and switch the headlights and turn signals OFF.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of the headlight assembly.
- Look at the old bulb’s markings (printed on the base) so you buy the exact match. Match the number on the old bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the correct bulb socket
- Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight assembly.
- Find the turn signal socket (typically the amber-bulb socket). It will have a wiring connector going to a twist-lock socket.
- If you’re unsure, turn the hazards ON briefly, then OFF, and watch which bulb area flashes (do not touch hot parts).
Step 2: Make room for your hand (if needed)
- If access is tight, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently release any plastic push-clips holding a nearby air duct/snorkel.
- Carefully move the duct aside without forcing it. If it fights you, re-check for hidden clips.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket and rotate it about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Hold the socket firmly and pull the bulb straight out (most are a push-in style).
- If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—do not twist hard enough to break the socket.
- Use the flashlight to read the bulb number on the base and confirm the replacement matches.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Still wearing nitrile gloves, push the new amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the glass portion with bare fingers. Handle by the base whenever possible.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket into the headlight
- Insert the socket into the housing, making sure the tabs line up.
- Twist clockwise by hand about a quarter-turn until it locks.
- Reinstall any duct or clips you moved using the plastic trim removal tool to align clips, then press them in by hand.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Use the same steps for the other front turn signal bulb.
- Replacing both keeps brightness and color consistent.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Turn hazards ON and walk around the car to confirm both front signals blink normally.
- If a signal blinks fast, the bulb may be the wrong type or not seated—remove and reseat the bulb and socket.
