🔧 Focus - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Focus uses a bulb inside the headlight housing for the front turn signal. The job is usually done from under the hood by twisting the bulb socket out, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling it.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlight cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you raise the car, support it with jack stands on solid ground.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park (or in gear if manual), and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel toward the side you’re working on (gives more space).
- Confirm the bulb type by pulling the old bulb first and matching its number (common fits are 3157NA/3157A or 7440A depending on headlamp setup).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify the correct side
- Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the car to confirm which front turn signal is out.
- Turn the hazards OFF before starting work.
Step 2: Access the turn signal bulb (under-hood method)
- Open the hood and locate the back of the headlight assembly on the affected side.
- Find the turn signal bulb socket (it will have a wiring connector going into a twist-lock socket).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- If space is tight, use the wheel-well method below.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb from the socket
- Hold the socket in one hand.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (some styles may need a gentle wiggle).
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If your bulb has offset “tabs” (keyed fit), line them up before pushing in.
- Don’t force it—realign and try again.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
- Rotate the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Turn on the hazard lights and verify the front turn signal flashes normally.
Step 6 (If you can’t reach it): Wheel-well access method
- Loosen the wheel lug nuts slightly using a 21mm socket.
- Raise the front corner using a floor jack and support with jack stands.
- Remove the wheel using the 21mm socket.
- Remove the front fender liner fasteners near the headlight using a trim clip removal tool.
- Pull the liner back and reach up to the back of the headlight to remove the socket (counterclockwise 1/4 turn), swap bulb, and reinstall.
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts.
- Lower the car, then tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Test left and right turn signals and hazards.
- If the new bulb “hyper-flashes” (fast blinking), the bulb may be the wrong type or there may be another bulb out on that same side.
- Make sure the socket is fully locked; a loose socket can cause intermittent operation.
