🔧 Equinox - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Equinox’s front turn signal bulb sits in the back of the headlamp housing. The job is mainly about getting your hand to the bulb socket, swapping the bulb, and making sure the new bulb is fully seated so it won’t flicker or hyper-flash.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 5–10 minutes (they get hot).
- ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition while your hands are near wiring.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life); use gloves.
- ✅ Battery disconnect is not required, but it’s okay to disconnect the negative terminal if you want maximum safety.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Flashlight

- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If you’re not sure which bulb your Equinox uses, pull the old bulb first and match the number printed on it (this avoids buying the wrong one).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side and bulb
- Turn the hazard lights on briefly, then turn them back off.
- Use a flashlight to identify which front corner isn’t flashing.
Step 2: Get access behind the headlamp
- On the side you’re working on, reach behind the headlamp from the engine bay.
- If your hand space is tight, remove the air inlet/duct fasteners using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension, then move the duct aside.
- If you run into plastic push-clips, remove them with a trim clip removal tool.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the turn signal socket on the back of the headlamp assembly (the socket that lines up with the amber reflector area).
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- If stuck, wiggle—don’t yank wires.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Use nitrile gloves.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a press-fit).
- Check for corrosion or melted plastic; if present, the socket may also need replacement.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, press the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not force it at an angle (it can bend contacts).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and any removed parts
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp and rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Reinstall the air inlet/duct fasteners using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for 10mm air duct fasteners (snug—do not overtighten plastic).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way so brightness and color match.
âś… After Repair
- Test left and right turn signals and hazards.
- If the turn signal flashes fast (hyper-flash), re-check that the bulb is the correct type and fully seated in the socket.
- Verify the bulb socket is fully locked (a loose socket can cause intermittent operation).
