🔧 Corolla - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Corolla’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight housings. The job is mostly “access, twist, replace” from behind the headlight, then test the turn signals and hazards to confirm everything works.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let the headlight area cool before reaching behind the housing.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition so the lights can’t be turned on accidentally.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Short extension (3")
- Trim clip removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

- Front turn signal bulb (amber 7440A) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Switch the ignition OFF and remove the key.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves (thin gloves that keep oils off the bulb).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and locate the turn signal socket
- Open the hood and look behind each headlight assembly (driver and passenger side).
- Use a flashlight and find the turn signal bulb socket (it’s the smaller twist-lock socket going into the headlight housing).
Step 2: Make room (only if your hand won’t fit)
- If access is tight, remove the nearby air intake snorkel/duct fasteners.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop up any push-clips.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove any 10mm bolt(s) holding the duct.
- Lift the duct/snorkel out of the way.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
- Pull the socket straight back out of the headlight housing.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—don’t force.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on this style).
- Install the new amber 7440A bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean dry cloth before installing.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the housing, making sure the tabs line up.
- Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it stops (snug/locked).
Step 6: Reinstall any ducting you moved
- Reposition the intake duct/snorkel.
- Reinstall any 10mm bolt(s) using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Reinstall push-clips by pressing them back in (use the trim clip removal tool if needed to align them).
✅ After Repair
- 🔁 Turn ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- 🚨 Turn on hazard lights and confirm both front turn signals blink evenly.
- If the signal blinks fast, re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
