🔧 3500 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your 3500, the front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlamp assembly and is usually replaced from the engine-bay side by removing and twisting out the bulb socket. The main “gotcha” is that there are two common headlamp styles, and the bulb type can differ, so I’ll show both access paths.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool before touching bulbs.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the glass of a halogen bulb; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition so the turn signal can’t be bumped on.
- ⚠️ If you must remove the battery cable for access, remove negative (-) first and reinstall it last.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlamps and hazards OFF.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of the headlamp assembly.
- Tip: Replace both sides to match color/brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which headlamp style you have
- Look at the front of the headlamp: if it has multiple reflector sections and no projector “lens bubble,” it’s typically the quad halogen style.
- If you see a round projector lens, it’s the projector-style headlamp.
- Either way, you’ll be removing a socket from the back of the headlamp; access room is what changes.
Step 2: Access the rear of the headlamp
- From the engine bay, reach behind the headlamp with a flashlight to find the turn signal socket (usually an outer/lower socket compared to the high/low beam).
- If your hands don’t fit, remove the nearby intake/air snorkel or inner cover (varies by side):
- Use a trim clip removal tool and/or Phillips screwdriver to pop/remove plastic clips.
- Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension to remove small bolts if present.
- Tip: Set clips/bolts in a cup.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket at the back of the headlamp.
- Turn it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass/contacts).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp opening.
- Turn clockwise about a quarter-turn until it locks.
- Reinstall any snorkel/covers you removed using the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, Phillips screwdriver, and trim clip removal tool as needed.
Step 6: Test operation
- Turn the key on and test the left and right turn signals.
- Verify the flash rate is normal and the bulb is bright and amber.
- If it “hyper-flashes” (very fast), recheck the bulb seating and socket connection.
âś… After Repair
- Confirm both turn signals and hazards work.
- Make sure the socket is fully locked so water can’t enter the headlamp.
- If one side still doesn’t work, swap the new bulb to the other side to see if the bulb is defective.
