🔧 Outback - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Outback’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight assemblies. On your Outback, the most common DIY method is to access the bulb from behind the headlight in the engine bay (no bumper removal needed in most cases).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you must loosen the battery for access, avoid shorting the terminals with tools.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If access is tight on the passenger side, you may remove the intake snorkel (simple plastic duct) using a flat trim clip tool and/or Phillips screwdriver.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the turn signal bulb socket
- Use a small flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly from the engine bay.
- Find the turn signal socket (usually the socket closest to the outer edge of the headlight). It will have a wiring connector going to it.
Step 2: Make room for your hand (only if needed)
- If you can’t reach the socket, remove the plastic intake snorkel on the passenger side using a flat trim clip tool or Phillips screwdriver.
- If you still need room, you can loosen the battery hold-down with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet and shift the battery slightly. Do not disconnect it unless necessary.
- Take a quick photo before moving parts.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
- Pull the socket straight back to remove it from the headlight housing.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb from the socket
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, push the new amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it gently with a clean, dry cloth before installing.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing, aligning the tabs.
- Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
Step 7: Reinstall anything you removed
- Reinstall the intake snorkel using the flat trim clip tool or Phillips screwdriver.
- If you loosened the battery hold-down, tighten it with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet until snug.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Test the hazard lights to confirm both sides blink at a normal speed.
- If the bulb blinks fast, remove it and re-seat it; also check the other front/rear bulb on that side.
