🔧 Front Turn Signal Bulb - Replacement

The front turn signal bulb on your Outback is serviced from the front lamp housing, usually through the wheel well access area. You’ll remove the access cover, twist the bulb socket out, and replace the amber bulb with the correct matching type.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlamps off and let the bulb cool before touching anything.
  • Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers.
  • Work with the steering wheel turned away from the side you’re servicing for better access.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Use care around the wheel liner and fasteners so they do not crack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wheel chock
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the front wheels away from the side you are servicing.
  • If replacing both sides, do one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.
  • Work one side at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the wheel well area

  • Use a flat-blade trim tool to remove the fasteners holding back the front portion of the wheel liner on the side you are servicing.
  • Gently pull the liner back far enough to reach the back of the headlamp housing.
  • Do not force the liner.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket at the rear of the headlamp housing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • If it is tight, use a gloves grip only. Do not pry hard with a tool.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb into the socket.
  • Make sure it seats fully and matches the original style.
  • Keep the bulb clean.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Make sure it is fully seated so moisture cannot get in.

Step 5: Refit the wheel liner fasteners

  • Use the flat-blade trim tool to reinstall any clips or fasteners you removed.
  • Make sure the liner sits flush and does not rub the tire.

Step 6: Test the new bulb

  • Turn the ignition on and activate the turn signal for that side.
  • Check that the bulb flashes normally and matches the other side’s brightness and color.
  • If it does not work, remove the socket and confirm the bulb is seated correctly.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both front turn signals and the hazard lights.
  • Make sure the wheel liner is secured and not touching the tire.
  • Verify the new bulb matches the opposite side in color and blink rate.
