🔧 Forester - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Forester’s front turn signal bulbs sit in the back of each headlight assembly. The job is mostly about gaining access, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping in the correct amber bulb without damaging the new bulb or the socket seal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your Forester uses replaceable front turn-signal bulbs (not an LED module).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let the headlight area cool before working.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers off the glass of the new bulb; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Make sure the rubber seal on the bulb socket seats fully to prevent moisture in the headlight.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the headlight/turn signal switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see behind the headlight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight
- Open the hood and locate the back side of the headlight assembly for the side you’re working on.
- If access is tight, remove the plastic intake snorkel/duct near the headlight using a trim clip remover (for the push-clips) and a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet (for any bolts).
- Tip: Put clips/bolts in a cup.
Step 2: Identify the turn signal socket
- Using a flashlight, look for the turn signal bulb socket on the headlight (typically the outer side of the housing).
- Confirm you have the correct socket by tracing the wiring to the bulb socket you can twist out by hand.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn by hand.
- If it’s stuck, use a nitrile gloves grip and gently assist with a flathead screwdriver on the socket tabs (do not pry hard).
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlight.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a pull-fit).
- Install the new 7440A amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; use nitrile gloves.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Inspect the socket O-ring/seal for dirt or damage, then wipe it clean.
- Insert the socket back into the headlight and twist clockwise to lock it.
- Make sure it feels fully seated and snug by hand (no tools needed).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other front turn signal bulb.
- Tip: Replace in pairs for even brightness/color.
Step 7: Reinstall any removed ducting/clips
- Reinstall the intake snorkel/duct and push-clips using a trim clip remover (to align clips) and tighten any bolts with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Turn on hazard lights and walk around to confirm both front signals flash evenly.
- If a bulb doesn’t work: remove the socket again and confirm the bulb is fully pushed in and the socket is fully locked.
