🔧 Flex - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Flex’s front turn signal bulb sits in the headlamp housing. The job is mostly about gaining access, removing the bulb socket, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.

Assumption: Your Flex uses a serviceable front turn signal bulb (not an LED-only lamp); bulb type can vary—match the new bulb to the old one.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool if it was recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life); use gloves.
  • ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • If you’ll use the wheel-well access method, place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Turn the steering wheel toward the side you’re working on (gives more room at the wheel liner).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb by checking the old one

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a flashlight to see the back of the headlamp area.
  • Match the new bulb to the old bulb.

Step 2: Access the turn signal bulb socket (easy under-hood path)

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of the headlamp assembly on the side you’re replacing.
  • Look for the turn signal bulb socket (a twist-lock socket) going into the headlamp housing.
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If access is too tight to turn the socket by hand, move to Step 3 (wheel-well access).

Step 3: Access the socket through the wheel well (if under-hood access is tight)

  • Place wheel chocks, then slightly loosen nothing (wheel removal usually not required).
  • If you need more space, raise the front corner using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Remove the front wheel-well liner fasteners near the front of the liner using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" socket extension.
  • Remove any push-pins using a trim clip removal tool. (A trim clip tool is a forked pry tool that pops plastic clips out without breaking them.)
  • Peel the liner back just enough to reach the back of the headlamp.
  • Rotate the turn signal socket counterclockwise and pull it out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket using nitrile gloves.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you touched glass, clean with alcohol.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and liner

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing and rotate it clockwise until it locks.
  • If you opened the wheel liner, reposition it and reinstall screws with a 7mm socket and clips with a trim clip removal tool.
  • If the vehicle was raised, lower it safely by removing jack stands and lowering the floor jack.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way (bulbs age together, so pairs help prevent a second failure soon).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and walk around to confirm both front signals flash evenly.
  • If one side flashes fast, that bulb isn’t seated, is the wrong type, or the socket connection isn’t locked.
