🔧 RAV4 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your front turn signal bulb sits in the headlight housing. You’ll access the bulb socket from behind the headlight, swap the bulb, and reinstall the socket so it seals against moisture.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool before reaching in.
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this bulb swap.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight/turn signal switch OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and have your flashlight ready.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side bulb
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly to see which front turn signal is out, then turn hazards OFF.
- Use a flashlight to locate the back of the headlight on the failed side.
Step 2: Locate the front turn signal socket
- From behind the headlight, find the socket closest to the outer corner of the headlight (toward the fender).
- Use a flashlight to clearly see the socket tabs.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand.
- If it’s stuck, use a nitrile gloves grip and gently help the socket start turning—do not pry on the plastic.
- Pull the socket straight out once it unlocks.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new 7440 amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you touch glass, wipe with alcohol.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Align the socket tabs with the headlight housing slots.
- Push the socket in fully, then rotate clockwise about a quarter-turn until it locks.
- Make sure the socket sits flat and snug (this helps keep water out).
Step 6: Test operation
- Turn the hazards ON and verify the front bulb flashes normally.
- If it doesn’t light, remove the socket again and confirm the bulb is pushed in all the way.
✅ After Repair
- Verify both left and right front turn signals flash at the same speed.
- Check that the bulb is amber and the socket is fully locked to prevent moisture intrusion.
- If the turn signal still “hyper-flashes,” check the other bulbs on that same side (rear turn/brake) for another burnt bulb.
