🔧 Tundra - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp assemblies. Replacing them is usually a quick job: twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and test the signals.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the radiator fans and belts.
- ⚠️ If you raise the front end, support your Tundra with jack stands (never rely on a floor jack alone).
- ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves; don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- Flat trim tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension
- Phillips screwdriver
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- 21mm socket
- Torque wrench (30-250 ft-lbs range)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2
- Fender liner clips - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock a rear wheel using wheel chocks.
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
- Assumption: Your Tundra uses an amber front turn signal bulb (common fitment). If your bulb base doesn’t match, match the old bulb exactly at purchase.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify the bulb you’re replacing
- Turn the hazards ON briefly, then OFF, to confirm which front side is out.
- Use nitrile gloves and a flashlight to look into the front lamp area.
Step 2: Choose your access method
- Method A (often easiest for beginners): Access through the wheel well liner.
- Method B: Access from under the hood if your hand fits behind the headlamp.
Step 3 (Method A): Raise the front corner (recommended)
- Place wheel chocks behind a rear tire.
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front corner on the side you’re working on.
- Set the truck onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
Step 4 (Method A): Remove the front wheel for space (optional but helpful)
- Use a 21mm socket to remove the lug nuts and take the wheel off.
- When reinstalling later, Torque to 177 Nm (131 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Step 5 (Method A): Open the fender liner access
- Use a trim clip removal tool and flat trim tool to pop out the plastic clips/splash shield retainers near the front of the wheel well.
- If a screw is present, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.
- Pull the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlamp.
Step 6 (Method B): Create space under the hood (if needed)
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the turn signal bulb socket at the rear of the headlamp assembly.
- If an intake snorkel cover blocks access, remove the bolts with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension, then move it aside.
- Tip: Don’t force your hand—use Method A.
Step 7: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Reach the bulb socket behind the headlamp and rotate it counterclockwise using your gloved hand.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 8: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on most wedge-base bulbs).
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- Keep using nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
Step 9: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
- Rotate clockwise by hand until it locks snugly.
Step 10: Reassemble what you removed
- If you pulled back the liner, reinstall all clips using the trim clip removal tool and flat trim tool to press them fully seated.
- If you removed an under-hood piece, reinstall bolts using the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- If you removed the wheel, reinstall lug nuts with a 21mm socket, lower the truck, then Torque to 177 Nm (131 ft-lbs) with a torque wrench.
Step 11: Test operation
- Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals and hazards.
- If the turn signal “fast flashes,” one bulb is still out (or the wrong bulb is installed).
âś… After Repair
- Confirm both front turn signals work normally (no rapid blinking).
- Walk around and verify the rear turn signal on that side also works (fast-flash can be caused by a rear bulb too).
- Recheck the fender liner is secured so it won’t rub the tire.
