🔧 Outback - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Outback’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlight assemblies. Replacing them is usually a quick job from under the hood by removing the bulb socket, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything securely.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool before starting; bulbs and housings can get hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten bulb life if you touch the glass.
- ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF and keys out while working near the radiator fans.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the back of each headlight assembly.
- Assumption: your Outback uses an amber front turn signal bulb (common fit is 7440A). Match the old bulb number before installing the new one.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly on the side you’re replacing.
- Find the turn signal socket (a twist-lock socket going into the headlight housing).
Step 2: Create a little working room (if needed)
- If your hand space is tight, use a trim clip removal tool to pop up any nearby plastic push-clips on the upper radiator cover/trim so you can gently move it for access.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the center pin slightly, then remove the clip with the trim clip removal tool.
- Tip: Don’t force clips; they break easily.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Hold the socket firmly and pull the bulb straight out by hand (it’s a push-in style).
- Use a flashlight to read the bulb number on the base and confirm the replacement matches.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean and dry (oil can create hot spots).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing, aligning the tabs.
- Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn by hand until it stops (snug). Torque: not applicable (hand-tight only).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same steps for the opposite front turn signal so both sides match in brightness and color.
- Tip: Replacing in pairs helps avoid uneven blinking.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Verify the turn signal flashes at a normal speed (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
- Walk around the front of the vehicle and confirm the bulb is amber and bright.
- If you removed any push-clips, reinstall them by pressing the outer body in, then pressing the center pin flush.
