šŸ”§ Legacy - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Legacy’s front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlight assembly and can usually be replaced from under the hood without removing the whole headlight. You’ll remove the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything so the signal flashes correctly and stays visible.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let the headlight area cool if it was recently on.
  • āš ļø Do not pull on wiring; twist and pull the bulb socket by hand.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required, but keep metal tools away from the battery terminals.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip remover (specialty)
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1
  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1

Assumption: Most Legacy trims use an amber 7440/7440A-style bulb; match the new bulb to the old one.

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight assembly.
  • Put on nitrile gloves; they help grip the socket and keep oils off parts.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the turn signal bulb socket

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly.
  • Identify the turn signal socket (a twist-lock socket going into the headlight housing).
  • If space is tight, use the access steps next.

Step 2: Create working room (only if needed)

  • If an intake duct/snorkel blocks your hand, loosen/remove its fasteners using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • If there are plastic push-clips, pop them up using a trim clip remover (specialty).
  • Set the duct/clips aside so you can reach the bulb socket comfortably.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket from the headlight

  • Grip the socket firmly by hand (gloves help).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Don’t force it—re-seat and twist again.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb from the socket

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—do not use a screwdriver on the bulb.

Step 5: Install the new turn signal bulb

  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Make sure it matches the old bulb’s base and size before installing.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket into the headlight

  • Insert the socket back into the headlight opening.
  • Twist clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks in place.
  • Reinstall any ducting or clips you removed using the 10mm socket and trim clip remover (specialty).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same procedure for the other front turn signal bulb.
  • Replacing both helps keep brightness consistent.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Verify the flash rate is normal (a very fast flash usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
  • Walk around the front of the car to confirm the amber light is bright and steady when blinking.
  • If the bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb firmly, then re-test.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $8-$30 (parts only)

You Save: $32-$90 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.8 hours.
