🔧 4Runner - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your 4Runner’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp housing, and they can be replaced from behind the headlight without removing the bumper. You’ll remove the bulb socket, swap in the new bulb, and verify the flash works normally (not “hyper-flashing”).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool if lights were just on (bulbs can be hot).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Make sure the bulb locks fully in the socket to prevent water intrusion.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
- Plastic trim tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🔦 Open the hood and use a small flashlight to find the turn signal bulb socket behind each headlamp.
- 🧼 If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease (a silicone grease that helps block moisture) to the socket seal during reassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear of the headlamp
- Open the hood.
- Use a small flashlight to locate the bulb sockets on the back of the headlamp housing (driver and passenger sides).
- If anything is blocking your hand slightly, gently move it aside using a plastic trim tool (do not force wiring).
Step 2: Remove the front turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grasp the turn signal bulb socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If tight, wiggle gently—don’t pry hard.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb from the socket
- Hold the socket firmly and pull the bulb straight out (it’s a push-in style).
- Use the small flashlight to confirm the socket terminals are clean and dry.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, push the new front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA) straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If using it, apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease around the socket’s rubber seal only (avoid packing grease into the electrical terminals).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket into the headlamp
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
- Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn by hand until it stops and feels locked.
- Locked socket = keeps water out.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other front turn signal bulb.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness and color.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- ✅ Turn on hazard lights and walk around to confirm both front signals flash evenly.
- ✅ If a turn signal “hyper-flashes,” recheck that the bulb is the correct type and fully seated.
- ✅ Confirm the socket is fully locked and no wires are pinched.
