🔧 Tacoma - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the front amber turn signal bulb in the front lamp assembly on your Tacoma. The bulb is accessed from behind the headlamp area under the hood, then the socket twists out by hand.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were just used.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves to keep skin oil off the bulb and to protect your hands.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on the wires. Always twist and pull the plastic socket.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb, amber 7440A/7440NA - Qty: 1 per side
  • Front turn signal bulbs, amber 7440A/7440NA - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tacoma on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Turn the light switch OFF.
  • Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp housing.
  • Replacing both sides keeps brightness even.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Secure the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Use your hand to release the secondary hood latch at the front of the hood.
  • Use the hood prop rod to hold the hood open.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Locate the Front Turn Signal Socket

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the front corner of the headlamp assembly.
  • Find the turn signal socket at the outer side of the lamp housing.
  • The socket has wires attached and sits behind the amber front turn signal area.

Step 3: Remove the Socket

  • Use your hand to grip the plastic socket body.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • If it feels slippery, use a clean microfiber towel for extra grip.
  • Do not twist the wires.

Step 4: Remove the Old Bulb

  • Use your gloved fingers to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • If the bulb is stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling straight back.
  • If you see dirt or light corrosion, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently loosen debris without bending the metal contacts.

Step 5: Install the New Bulb

  • Use your gloved fingers to push the new 7440A/7440NA amber bulb straight into the socket.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated.
  • If you touch the bulb with bare fingers, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber towel.
  • A fully seated bulb prevents flickering.

Step 6: Reinstall the Socket

  • Use your hand to place the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Line up the socket tabs with the slots in the housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about one-quarter turn until it locks.
  • No torque spec is used here because this is a hand-tight twist-lock socket.

Step 7: Test the Bulb

  • Use the turn signal stalk to turn on the side you replaced.
  • Use the hazard switch to test both front turn signals.
  • Walk to the front of your Tacoma and confirm the bulb flashes amber.
  • If it does not work, turn the lights OFF, remove the socket, reseat the bulb, and test again.

Step 8: Close the Hood

  • Use your hand to place the hood prop rod back in its clip.
  • Lower the hood gently.
  • Let the hood latch securely from about 8-12 inches above the latch.
  • Use your hand to lightly lift the hood and confirm it is fully latched.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm both front turn signals flash at normal speed.
  • ✅ Confirm the dash turn signal indicator is not flashing rapidly.
  • ✅ If rapid flashing continues, inspect the rear turn signal bulb on the same side.
  • ✅ No scan tool, programming, or reset is required.
