🔧 Malibu - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Malibu’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp assemblies. The job is mainly getting the headlamp housing slid forward enough to reach the bulb socket, then swapping the bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life). Use gloves or a clean paper towel.
- ⚠️ Support the headlamp assembly so it doesn’t scratch the bumper or fender.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flat trim tool
- Flathead screwdriver (medium)
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4")
- Flashlight

- Front turn signal / front park bulb (amber) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and keep a flashlight handy.
- Replace both sides to match brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access to the headlamp area
- Open the hood and locate the headlamp assembly behind the lens.
- Use a flashlight to identify the headlamp retaining hardware at the top of the assembly.
Step 2: Remove the headlamp retaining pins/fasteners
- Use a flat trim tool or flathead screwdriver (medium) to lift and remove the headlamp retaining pins (or release their locks, depending on what you see).
- If your side has a small bolt instead of (or in addition to) a pin, remove it using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension (1/4").
- Keep the pins/bolts together per side.
Step 3: Slide the headlamp assembly forward
- Grip the headlamp housing and pull it straight forward gently.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle slightly while pulling—don’t pry against the painted bumper.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal/park bulb socket on the back of the headlamp (it’s one of the smaller twist-lock sockets).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Use nitrile gloves to avoid touching the glass.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and headlamp
- Reinsert the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Slide the headlamp assembly back into position, lining up the locating tabs.
- Reinstall the retaining pins and/or bolts:
- If bolts were removed, tighten with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet until snug (do not overtighten).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 for the opposite headlamp.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test:
- Left and right turn signals
- Hazard lights
- Parking lights (the bulb is often dual-function)
- If the turn signal blinks fast, the bulb may be the wrong type, not seated fully, or there may be another bulb out.
- Make sure the headlamp sits evenly and the pins/bolts are fully installed.
