Your Explorer’s front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlamp housing. To replace it, you remove a couple of fasteners, pull the headlamp forward, then twist out the bulb socket and swap the bulb.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
• Open the hood and support it securely.
• Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the headlamp fasteners

• Use safety glasses and flashlight to see the top of the headlamp.
• Use an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the two bolts at the top of the headlamp assembly.
• If a plastic push-clip is present, use a flat trim tool to lift the center pin, then remove the clip. (A trim tool is a flat plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without breaking them.)

Step 2: Pull the headlamp assembly forward

• Put on nitrile gloves.
• Grab the headlamp housing and pull it straight forward with steady pressure.
• If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it; do not pry hard on the lens.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal socket

• Locate the turn signal bulb socket at the rear of the headlamp (usually the amber/outer section).
• Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand and pull it out of the housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

• Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
• Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
• If you touched the glass, wipe with alcohol.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and headlamp

• Insert the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
• Slide the headlamp assembly back into place, making sure the alignment pins seat correctly.
• Reinstall the top bolts using the 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
• Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
• Reinstall any push-clips using the flat trim tool to press them in flush.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

• Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other front turn signal bulb.

✅ After Repair

• Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
• Test the hazard lights to confirm both sides flash evenly.
• If the signal flashes very fast, the bulb may be the wrong type or not seated fully.
• Make sure the headlamp housing sits flush and isn’t loose.
