🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Highlander’s front turn signal bulbs sit inside each headlight housing. The job is mostly reaching behind the headlight, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool first; bulbs and housings can get hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)

📋 Before You Begin

- 💡 Switch the headlight stalk to OFF and make sure the turn signal is not on.
- 🔦 Open the hood and identify the back of each headlight housing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the bulb you’re replacing
- Use the flashlight to look behind the headlight housing for the turn-signal socket (typically an amber-tinted bulb or labeled socket).
- Turn on the hazards briefly to confirm which front bulb is out, then turn them OFF before continuing.
Step 2: Create working room (if access is tight)
- If your hand can’t comfortably reach the socket, remove nearby plastic covers/ducting.
- Use a trim clip remover to pop up any plastic push-clips holding the intake snorkel/upper cover.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove any 10mm bolts that secure the ducting or small brackets that block access.
- Tip: Set clips/bolts in a cup.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Reach behind the headlight and firmly grip the turn-signal socket.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb and install the new bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new 7440A amber bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry paper towel before installing.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing, making sure the tabs line up.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it locks snugly.
Step 6: Reinstall any covers/ducting you removed
- Reinstall bolts using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Reinstall plastic push-clips using the trim clip remover (to position) and press them in by hand.
- If any Phillips screws were removed, reinstall using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the ignition ON and test left/right turn signals and hazards.
- ✅ Walk around the front to confirm both sides flash at a normal speed.
- ✅ If it flashes fast, recheck that the correct bulb is fully seated and the socket is locked.
