🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the front turn signal bulb by accessing the back of the headlight assembly from inside the engine bay. The bulb sits in a twist-lock socket, so it’s a quick job with minimal tools.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the bulb cool before touching it.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
- ⚠️ Keep keys out of the ignition so lights can’t be switched on accidentally.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool

- Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and make sure the turn signals are off.
- Open the hood and have a flashlight ready so you can see behind the headlight.
- If a plastic air guide or cover blocks access on your side, remove its push-clips using a trim clip removal tool. (A push-clip is a plastic fastener that pops out.)
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the front turn signal socket
- Open the hood and look behind the headlight on the side you’re working on.
- Use a flashlight to find the twist-lock bulb socket for the turn signal (it’s on the back of the headlight housing).
Step 2: Remove any cover or air guide (if equipped)
- If something blocks your hand from reaching the socket, remove the plastic push-clips with a trim clip removal tool.
- Set the clips aside so they don’t get lost.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, wiggle—don’t force.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting for this style).
- Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Keep the bulb clean—use nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlight housing.
- Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place by hand.
Step 6: Reinstall any removed clips/covers
- Reinstall the plastic air guide/cover and push-clips you removed.
- Press the center pins back in to lock the clips (use the trim clip removal tool if needed to align them).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same procedure on the opposite headlight so both bulbs match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the left and right turn signals.
- Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the Highlander to confirm both front signals flash evenly.
- If it doesn’t light up, remove the socket and make sure the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
- If it flashes fast, one of the turn signal bulbs is still out (check front and rear on that side).
