🔧 Forester - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the front turn signal bulb from behind the headlight, usually through the front fender liner. The job is simple, but space is tight—take your time so you don’t break plastic clips.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🛑 Let the headlight area cool if it was recently on.
- 🛑 If you jack up the front corner, support it with jack stands before reaching into the wheel well.
- 🛑 Don’t touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 (replace in pairs recommended)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (this opens up wheel-well access).
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create access through the wheel well
- Turn the wheel to full lock for more room.
- If you need more space, raise that front corner using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and place a jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the proper support point.
Step 2: Pull back the front fender liner
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push-clips holding the front edge of the fender liner.
- If equipped with screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2 or a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet.
- Gently peel the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlight.
- Tip: Don’t over-bend the liner.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to locate the turn signal socket at the back of the headlight assembly.
- Grip the socket and twist it counterclockwise (about a quarter-turn), then pull it straight out.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—don’t yank the wires.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new front turn signal bulb (amber) straight in until fully seated.
- Tip: Match the old bulb number to avoid mistakes.
Step 5: Test the turn signal
- Before reassembly, switch the ignition to ON and test the turn signal.
- If it doesn’t work, turn ignition OFF, remove the socket, and reseat the bulb.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and fender liner
- Insert the socket back into the headlight and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Reposition the fender liner.
- Reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool and reinstall screws using the Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet.
Step 7: If you removed a wheel, torque the lug nuts
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-start lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle with the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Use a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs) to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 120 Nm (88.5 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Test left and right turn signals and the hazard flashers.
- Make sure the fender liner is secured and not rubbing the tire.
- If the turn signal blinks very fast, one bulb may still be out (or an LED bulb may need a load resistor).
